On 15th Oct 2007, Medtronic voluntarily announced that “its Sprint Fidelis Medtronic
defibrillator leads due to a small number of fractures that are detected in a number
of patients. The Medtronic defibrillator leads break more often than they should,
which can lead to sudden and painful shocks at times and can deliver unnecessary
electrical jolt. The electric shocks aren’t usually life threatening, but they are
impossible for patients to ignore.”
The defect is potentially fatal and patients are fearful they may be the next
victim. It is estimated that thousands of the Sprint Fidelis leads used in
implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy
defibrillators (CRT-Ds) will facture and require removal of the heart leads and
replacement. As a result, a case filed against Medtronic seeking order from the
court holding Medtronic is responsible for all diagnostic and medical charges and
any corrective surgical expenses caused by Medtronic’s defibrillator.
